Money-Driven Medicine

This is a great place to start in understanding what the U.S. health-care debate is all about.

Maggie Mahar's book Money-Driven Medicine is like a microphone listening in on the thoughts of doctors at the front line - in the exam room.

Watch this well put together piece on Bill Moyer's Journal.

A Uranium Mine on Colorado's Front Range?

The CEO of Powertech Uranium Corporation seems to think the answer to this question is "Yes, Indeed." And huge loopholes in legislation passed last year in Colorado are giving this corporation the green light to continue the permitting process.

In my first official gig as a freelance writer I delve into the case of the proposed "centennial uranium mine" near Nunn Colorado. With a little help from my friends and many hours on the phone I think I've distilled the finer points of this issue for your reading pleasure. May it light a fire under you. Frank the Tank

All of my favorite Blogs have posted this. Since it was so nice to see a member of congress take a stand on something I might as well jump on the Barney-wagon

Shakira Digs Paine

I always knew we were kindred spirits.

Latina brings us word that Paine's Common Sense is at the top of Shakira's reading list. Perhaps his revolutionary fire will light a passion in her and we will be wearing Shakira t-shirts in lieu of the traditional Che Guevara brand.

“Right now I am into the Founding Fathers — a brave group of people who understood the value of a fundamental concept for mankind: liberty. I’m reading a biography of Thomas Jefferson. My next book is Common Sense, by Thomas Paine. It is already on my nightstand, waiting its turn,” she says in the article. It’s not really light fare but any interest in joining an unofficial Shakira book club? I hear Paine’s political pamphlet, which instigated the revolution, was a bestseller when it was originally published in 1776. Think about it.

Dr. Gavin Mudd

Dr. Gavin Mudd PhD spoke at the Fort Collins senior center Tuesday August 18th. Dr. Mudd received his PhD from the University of Victoria in Australia and is currently a professor of civil engineering at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Mudd specializes in studying environmental impacts of in situ uranium mining. His appearance is significant to the Front Range of northern Colorado as there is a proposed uranium mine near Nunn, CO. A Vancouver based company - Powertech Uranium Corporation - has begun applying for permits to recover an estimated twelve million lbs of the yellow metal from the site.

Tom Paine's Ghost has been hard at work for our friends at Wolverine Farm Publishing compiling a comprehensive story about this entire issue and what it means for the residents around the proposed mine site. Please keep your eyes out for the article release at matterdaily.org.

Bobby McFerrin at the World Science Festival

Sorry I missed it this year. I swear one day I will live blog this wonderful and burgeoning event.

As my cheerful housemate has pointed out to me in the past the most impressive Bobby McFerrin Video out there is the following where he harmonizes with the audience singing the prelude - Ave Maria.

Shatner Does Palin... Again

For this of you who missed the first poetry reading the second is even better in my humble opinion. The fact that it involves Sarah Palin Tweets is even more appropriate.
